Business travel: Health is often left by the wayside

Study reveals the pressures of travel/careful planning ensures the right balance

During business trips, there is no official end to the working day and barely any time for sport and physical activity. Around 80 per cent of business travellers also work in the evenings after their meetings. Just as many state that they do not have time for their usual sports activities doing business trips; 77 per cent complain of being less physically active than usual. This was ascertained in the ‘Chefsache Business Travel 2016’ survey conducted by the Travel Management Companies initiative within the German Travel Association (Deutscher ReiseVerband, DRV).

More than two thirds of respondents also complained of a lack of regular meals and healthy nutrition. Seventy-five per cent tend to drink alcohol more on business trips than they would otherwise. Younger business travellers under the age of 40 are particularly concerned by the unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity, and at the same time, find it more difficult to relax and also sleep less when on business trips.

Professional travel management thereby helps business travellers to avoid the nearest fast-food outlets and instead head for restaurants offering healthy, balanced cuisine. It can recommend a bike hire service rather than a taxi for short trips within the city to counteract the lack of physical activity. A short walk can sometimes be good to clear the mind.
